Listen Up and Listen Well....

...because this doesn’t happen very often. Me getting all politically involved...

So, I have a proposition for you. Proposition 8. “What is Proposition 8,” you ask? A constitutional amendment proposed in California to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

What interest do I have in it? Well, I happen to believe that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” I believe that you have the same interest, no?



Personally, I believe that a healthy society depends on the functionality of a traditional marriage. I recognize that there is a saddening and overwhelming amount of dysfunction occurring in the “traditional” relationships of today, but creating a new type of relationship will not solve that problem. I believe that allowing and encouraging dysfunctional or non-traditional relationships will result in further erosion of our society.



However, I am thankful to live in country where we are free to choose, where “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” I am thankful that we can disagree respectfully. There are people that I care about and respect that feel differently than I do, and I’m thankful that we can all do our part to protect our own rights.

Several months ago, that was how I felt about proposition 8 – a matter of rights. One side for and one side against, each one voting to protect what they feel are personal rights. And while I feel it’s important to vote to protect my own rights and what’s important to me, I didn’t feel that I should go out and campaign against those who simply wanted different rights. If it’s important enough to people, they will vote, right? Then we’ll know how California (in this case) feels, and the rights will be distributed accordingly.

But here’s the thing. This is so much more than rights. The ramifications of this proposition will be so far reaching and ever lasting. This is history. It’s not simply pop culture. It’s not just trendy. It’s not simply allowing homosexuals the piece of paper or status symbol that they might receive from being allowed marriage. This is So. Much. More. As such, I invite you to educate yourself on the subject. You don’t want to be on the wrong side of history.
