In Theory

I have a couple of theories. Feel free to make fun of them. It wouldn't be the first time. I'm not sure where they came from - well, I think the sugar one was maybe from my Mom, but the other one just makes sense in my little brain, and I am fine with that. Here they are:

1. If you don't eat sugar when you are sick, then you will get better faster. I'm sure science has proven both sides of this argument, but to me it just makes sense. Sugar is not good for you. Taking care of your body will help you heal faster. Not eating sugar is taking care of your body, and therefore... you will get better faster. Right? Right.

2. Take your coat off when you go inside, so you can be warm when you are outside. Maybe this doesn't sound unusual if you are sitting inside a warm home, by the fire for example. When you are sitting in a high school classroom shivering while your coat hangs on the back of your chair though... that's when it becomes questionable (or pretty much ludicrous if you would've asked one of my friends). Still, it makes sense to me. If I have my coat on in the classroom, then what will I put on when I have to go sit in the freezing outside for 40 minutes of lunch? Mmmhh? What?

And my newest one...
3. The lower the temperature goes in your house, the more money you save. This one is pretty obvious... in a normal situation. But, as you can see, I'm not normal. Our heater has a strange malfunction lately where once it reaches the set temperature on the thermostat, the heat turns off, but the air keeps blowing. This only happens sometimes, and for the record we have called our landlords about it, but they haven't come to check out the problem. It's okay though, because we got a new money saving thermostat - me. How it works is, I turn the heater off until I am too cold to function (this is usually in the 67-72 degree range, so don't feel too bad), then I turn it on until I feel sufficiently defrosted, then turn it off again. Voila! (Do you think it works?) We also keep the heater off at night and when we leave the house. I get so excited when I get up in the morning and it's freezing in the house. Today, when we got home, it was down to 60 degrees! The colder it gets, the more money we save! (Right?) I mean, I guess if we lived someplace, like say Hawaii, it wouldn't be cold at all, and we wouldn't even have to use the heater, but think if how much money we would save if we lived in Winnipeg where their negative 6 degrees (fahrenheit) made our "feels like" 6 degrees today seem like nothing. Oh, those lucky Canadians!

Someone once told us (or maybe I read it on BGE's website?) that if you keep your WORKING (not in your case) thermostat at a livable temp, 68-72, then it doesn't have to work very hard to keep it up. But if you let it get too low in temp. then it has to kick into over drive, burning more fuel, to get to a livable temperature. Our neighbor was never home during the day and would turn her's off when she left, only having it on when she was home and her bill was much higher than ours. Have you noticed a difference in your bill thus far? If so, I'm doing what you're doing!

All I know is the average temperature this month was two degrees lower than last month and our bill was about $5 more. So, about the same. We will have to see this month, since it is so much colder.

We had one of our tundra weekends where, with the wind chill, we got down into the -30's. I hadn't even thought about our heating bill until I read you blog. Now, I have to say, I am a little worried! I like your coat theory, like you said it does make sense.

Layne's mom is a huge believer in theory #2 so it cracked me up to read it. I agree with all 3 theories. (Although I have a hard time sticking with #1!) I have had the kids in slippers and sweaters the last few days and kept the thermostat lower. They haven't complained (or turned blue) so far. We'll see how long it lasts. Our bill last month was $200. Not a pleasant surprise.

Oh my goodness...you had these theories in high school! I thought it was just a phase....

ha ha j/k...these are pretty much true and it brought back some funny memories of you refusing to wear your jacket in French class! :)

I agree with you on all three accounts! I have modified my belief in the second one though, I'm allowed to keep my jacket on if it is one of those sleeveless vest-type jackets.

With theory #1. I know it is true but I have a hard time doing it. It have heard ( and i am a health education major) that when you eat sugar, it lowers your immune system for up to 6 hours. So when you are already sick, your body has a harder time getting you better.

Weird thing just happened. I turned and looked at Darcy, she smiles and i thought she looked like Owen. Maybe because I am thinking about you guys.
