Still Princesses, Ponies, and Pink... For Now

Why didn't someone tell me I would only get four years with my little girl? Everyone always says, "Enjoy them while they're young, because they grow up fast." But don't you think they could have been a little more specific. Like say, "When your daughter turns four, she will grow up. Overnight." That would have been a lot more helpful for planning. (Also helpful, if you are planning on having children, remember that fall birthdays make them either the oldest or the youngest in their class at school - not that this has been a topic of much discussion around our house recently. I just thought I would be helpful.)
So Evie had her fourth birthday! Another topic that may or may not have been a topic of discussion around here recently is birthday parties. To do or not to do,.... well that is actually not the question. We have always known that we would probably not have birthday parties for our kids every year, but now that Evie is getting old enough (grown up, really) to recognize that her friend had a big birthday party last week with a bunch of kids, and she is having cake with, well...., us, we decided that we better think of something. I thought it should be a fun tradition that would be unusual, but not too complicated, and we settled on a sort of "treasure hunt" for her presents. We did a dry run for Dave on his birthday (a month before hers), so that Evelynn would know what was going on when her birthday rolled around. It worked out perfectly. She woke up and came into our room (as always) where she found a piece of paper with her name and a picture of the shower. She ran off to the shower to find a picture of the TV. She ran down... well, you get the idea. At the end, she found her presents! It was a lot of fun, and I see definite room for expansion in the idea. She also got to pick what we had for dinner, a tradition Dave and I share from our childhoods. AND I am still on the fence about the "making your child a really cool birthday cake" tradition. Last year I made semi-successful teacup and teapot cupcakes that have forever ruined my taste for store-bought vanilla frosting. This year, I planned a pony themed birthday - including a My Little Pony present, a trip to the farm for a pony ride, and... dun dun dun a pony cake (it was the easiest one I could find). Due to my aversion to vanilla frosting, I opted for cherry flavored. The cake turned out okay, but it was kind of a lot of work and I now have to add cherry frosting to my nausea-inducing list. I'm pretty sure that leaves me with chocolate next year, and I'm not sure I am ready to give that up yet. We may just go with the store bought cake. Or we could always just have brownies.

Look at that face. I don't think she could even see what the present was yet.

Tell me all about it...

You're how old?!
(Don't be jealous about the cake.)

Evie IS grown up! At the FHE swap she came over to me and said "Meg isn't sharing with Owen." When you can effectively tell on another kid...you're grown up! But seriously...how come no one told us that our kids will grow up overnight?? Lately Meg seems much more grown up....

Ran into your blog awhile back, and think it's stellar. A fantastic read. And your photography skills are pretty great, too. What kind of a camera do you have? It seems like you got a new one a while back, but I can't remember for sure... *emily norby*

Hey, I think I mentioned once that I read your blog a time or two, but I have to be honest. Since the P-day blog, I have been reading it and I have cracked up at all three of your latest entries. You are 3 for 3. Your blog is so good that I not only look at the pictures, I read what you write (I can't say the same about mine however, you have motivated me). That said, I wanted you to know that I am going to post a link to your blog from my blog so that I can skip the middle man step and go directly from mine to yours. You have received direct blog status. I hope you don't mind. (You may also see my blog if you want since I guess the sharing should be 2-way, but it is private, so if you care you can email and I'll add you kristen.heaton@gmail)
